Trip Report: Southern France and Corsica, April 19 - May 4, 2000
Yann Kolbeinsson, Iceland;
dayann@ismennt.is
In early 2000 I decided to go to Southern France in
the end of April, and soon after three Icelandic birdwatchers showed much
interest in coming with me as I go there annually and therefore know about
most of the good birding spots in the area. The others were Gaukur
Hjartarson, Gunnar Thór Hallgrímsson and Gunnlaugur
Thráinsson.
Itinerary
19 April: Cannes
We took a morning flight from Keflavík International Airport
(Iceland) south to Nice on the French Riviera (via Paris CDG). From
Nice we took a taxi to Cannes where we arrived around 19.00. As soon as
we arrived we went to one of my "local patches", a pond just outside
Cannes. Overnight at my home in Cannes.
The daylist: 26 species
20 April: Alpes-Maritimes
We used that day to check out all the small wetlands that are
found in the Alpes-Maritimes county (between Cannes and Monaco),
these were Etang de Fontmerle/Mougins, Vaugrenier and the Var estuary
which lies west of Nice Airport. We also visited two cliffs where some
migration could be observed, La Tête de Chien/La Turbie and Col d'Eze.
The first site gives a good view over the Riviera and Monaco/Monte
Carlo. Overnight again in Cannes.
The daylist: 81 species
21 April; Alpes-Maritimes
Now we went up in the mountains inland of Cannes (the
southernmost part of the French Alps). Areas visited were Caussols,
Calerne, Gourdon (small town), Cavillore, Plan-du-Peyron and Col de
Vence. We reached the highest point at Calerne (1300 m.a.s.l.). On the
way to these mountains we started at the pond Etang de
Fontmerle/Mougins at sunrise. We then ended the day at the Var estuary
before going back to Cannes. All these sites are in the Alpes-Maritimes
county.
The daylist: 100 species.
22 April: Alpes-Maritimes
As the weather was good we decided to go up in the Alps at two
places (still in the same county), Le BorŽon (>1800 m.a.s.l.) and La
Madone de Fenêstres (1900 m.a.s.l.). This took all day. Overnight in
Cannes.
The daylist: 49 species
23 April: Cannes - Camargue
Now we said goodbye to Cannes and drove west towards the
Camargue. Before getting there we visited the steppe Crau and made an
attempt for the Bonelli's Eagle in the Alpilles mountains, but due to much
rain we had to turn back. Instead we found a place to stay in the western
part of the Camargue, at Montcalm.
The daylist: 68 species
24 April: Camargue
From Montcalm we went through Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer
to the ornithological reserve at Pont-de-Gau. After a
nice stop there we drove north and south-east around the lake Vaccarés
with stops at Marais du Mas de Julian, Mas d'Agon and La Capelière
(where there are observatories). We stayed overnight at Salin-de-Giraud.
The daylist: 88 species
25 April: Camargue
We started early at La Capelière before going to
Beauduc on the shoreline where we looked for migrant passerines. After
that we were fortunate enough to get access to the Salins de Giraud (only
people with access cards can drive into that area of the Camargue, not to
be confused with the town Salin-de-Giraud!) where we went to two
lighthouses (Phare de Faraman and Phare de Beauduc). Also checked out
Grau de la Dent on the shoreline. In the evening we went towards the
Plage de Piémanson (south of Salin-de-Giraud). Overnight at
Salin-de-Giraud.
The daylist: 96 species
26 April: Camargue - Cannes
Last day in the Camargue. We started at the ponds near Plage
de Piémanson before going slowly north (and visiting Etang de
Grenouillet, Phare de la Gacholle, La Capelière and Mas d'Agon). After
these stops we went again into the steppe Crau (in search of Lesser
Kestrel) and then we went up in the Alpilles mountains. After dark we
drove east to Cannes where we stayed overnight.
The daylist: 94 species
27 April: Nice - Corsica
At 09.00 we took the ferry from Nice to Bastia in Corsica where
we arrived at 15.30. Then we drove south to Ajaccio where we stayed
overnight. Not much birding that day...
The daylist: 33 species
28 April: Corsica
Early morning at the Capitello river mouth near
Ajaccio, then we visited La Pointe de la Parata for seawatching. During
mid-day we were in Golfe de Sagone where we watched birds at the
Liamone estuary. Between Liamone and Ajaccio we also found a nice
birding spot (Col de S. Bastiano). In the evening we went to Corte (in
mid-Corsica) where we stayed overnight.
The daylist: 73 species
29 April: Corsica
Today we looked for Corsican Nuthatch and Marmora's
Warbler around Corte (at Vallée de Verghello and Col de Sorba). After
finding these birds we went to the eastern shore of Corsica, and visited
Plage de Padulone/Aléria and Etang d'Urbino before going back to Corte
for the night.
The daylist: 66 species
30 April: Corsica
Now we headed north to the Cap Corse with a visit in
the Asco Valley, but from Haut-Asco we walked towards Altore (2000
m.a.s.l.). After a nice walk we went down to the lowlands again and went
to the northernmost tip of Cap Corse (via Bastia), at a small village called
Barcaggio. There we assisted at a ringing camp for two days.
The daylist: 48 species
1 May: Corsica
All day at Barcaggio, Cap Corse.
The daylist: 70 species
2 May: Corsica
We stayed at Barcaggio till around noon, when we
headed south to Bastia with a stop at Macinaggio. When we got to Bastia
we went to the NE shore of Etang de Biguglia before taking the night
ferry to Nice (which departed at 20.00).
The daylist: 86 species
3 May: Nice - Cannes - Camargue
Arrival at Nice with the ferry at 07.00. From there we headed
directly to the mountains inland of Cannes, Caussols and Calerne (with a
stop at the Var estuary) and there we decided suddenly to go and end the
last day of the trip in the Camargue area. At 16.00 we arrived in the
Alpilles mountains to look for the Bonelli's Eagle successfully. Then we
went once more into the steppe Crau and finally in the Camargue where
we were till after sunset. Then we drove back to Cannes.
The daylist: 105 species
4 May
All except me (Yann) went back to Iceland from Nice (via Paris
CDG) at 10:10. I stayed in Cannes till 8 May when I went back to
Iceland, just like the migrants! During these few more days I found two
species that we hadn't seen previously which will be included in the
following bird list.
In total we managed to find 215 bird species between 19 April and 4 May
which must be a good total! 185 of these were seen in Southern France
while we managed to find 131 species in Corsica during our 6 day stay
there.
