Trip Report: Fuerteventura (Canary Islands), December 12, 1996 - January 1, 1997

- Leach's Storm-petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa): One flew south at Playa de
Sotovento de Jandia, and 20 feeding at Casas de las Solinas 30/12.
- Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis): One seen at Embalse de los Molinos 29/12.
- Little Egret (Egretta garzetta): 2 at Los Molinos 29/12. 2 at Las Solinas
30/12. One at Las Playas 31/12 and one at Jable de Corralejo 1/1.
- Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea): Three at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferrugineus): One pair at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Wigeon (Anas penelope): One at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Ring-necked Duck: (Aythya collaris): A female at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus): A 2-year bird was seen at
Barranco del a Torres 27/12.
- Buzzard (Buteo buteo insularum): Seen in smal numbers around Antigua and in
Barr. del a Torres.
- Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus dacotiae): Very common.
- Barbary Partridge (Alectoris barbara koenigi): 8 at Pressa de los Penitas
29/12 and 2 in Barr. del a Torres 1/1.
- Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventura): 3 at Castillo 28/12.
We took the last road on the left hand side right before the village
Castillo de Rico Roque, and scanned the area to the east. We saw the three
birds together after about 1km. A single bird was also seen at Istmo de la
Pared 30/12.
- Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus): A single bird at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Coot (Fulica atra): 75 at Los Molinos and 75 at Las Penitas 29/12.
- Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula): Just seen in small numbers at Playas
de Corralejo and Casas de las Salinas.
- Little Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius): 3 at Los Molinos 29/12 and 2 at
Las Salinas 30/12.
- Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus): 7 at Las Salinas 30/12 and 8 at
Jable de Corralejo 1/1.
- Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola): Seen in small numbers on rocky shores.
- Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus): 2 at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Turnstone (Arenaria interpres): Seen in small numbers on rocky shores.
- Sanderling (Calidris alba): 4 at Jable de Corralejo 1/1.
- Greenshank (Tringa nebularia): 3 at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos): 5 at Los Molinos 29/12.
- Wimbrel (Numenius phaeopus): Seen in small numbers on rocky shores.
- Common Snipe (Gallinula gallinula): 5 at Los Molinos and 3 at Las Penitas
29/12.
- Stone Curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus insularum): 1 at Barranco del Valle de
Miraflor 28/12.
- Cream-coloured Courser (Cursorius cursor): 6 birds on the "football field"
by the mill on the road from Tefia to Casas los Molinos 29/12.
- Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus graellsii): 10 at Las Playas 31/12.
- Yellow-legged Gull (Larus cachinnans atlantis): Seen scattered around the
coast, and 50 at Tefia 1/1.
- Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla): 10 birds flew north at Castillo 28/12.
- Sandwich Tern (Sterna sandvicensis): 3 birds at Los Salinas 30/12, and 2 at
Jable de Corralejo 1/1.
- Black-bellied Sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis): A total of 45 birds flew
north over on the road to La Pared, 1 km from the GC 640 road.
- Rock Dove (Columba liva): Regular in rocky areas. Good numbers was seen in
Barr. del la Torre and Los Molinos.
- Plain Swift (Apus unicolor): 30 at Gran Tarajal 31/12.
- Hoopoe (Upupa epops): Common and widespread. Seen in small numbers.
- Lesser Short-toed Lark (Calandrella rufescens polatzeki): Common and
widespread. Largest flock, 140 birds, was seen at Corrales de Miraflor 28/12.
- Berthelot's Pipit (Anthus berthelotii berthelotii): Common in small
numbers. Seen and heard almost everywere.
- Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea): 2 single birds.
- White Wagtail (Motacilla alba): Seen widespread in small numbers
- Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros): A female type was seen in Castillo
de Fustes 28/12.
- Canary Island Chat (Saxicola dacotiae): A total of 11 birds was seen. 2
males and 4 females in Barr. del a Torres, one pair in Barr. del Valle de
Miraflor 28/12, a male at Los Molinos 29/12, female at Las Penitas 29/12
and one male at Pajara 31/12.
- Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata orbitalis): Seen in small numbers,
total of 40, in areas with low vegetation.
- Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala leucogastra): 10 at Las Penitas
29/12 and 3 at Grand Tarajal 31/12.
- Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita): Seen and heard in small numbers. At
least 8 in Barr.del a Torres 28/12.
- Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus degener): 5-10 heard in the reedbed at Las
Penitas 29/12
- Great Grey Shrike (Lanius meridionalis koenigi): Common in small numbers.
Seen almost everywere.
- Common Raven (Corvus corax): About 20 seen.
- Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis): Common in cultivated aereas.
- Linnet (Carduelis cannabina harterti): Seen in small numbers. 10 at Barr. de
la Torres 28/12.
- Trumpeter Finch (Bucanetes githagineus amantum): Total of 100. Main site
around Los Molinos.
