Short Summary and Highlights

It was very dry during our trip with only a few hours rain in Fraser's Hill. We found very few fruiting trees. This certainly affected the abundance of some groups of birds, e.g. Doves, Bulbuls and Babblers. The forest floor was dry and we saw few leeches.

We saw or heard 218 species of birds (10 species were only heard) and 15 species of mammals. 130 species of birds were seen in Taman Negara including river Temebeling and 103 species at Fraser's Hill and The Gap.

A Black Cobra at close distance was a thrilling sight, and a Siamang seen well is surely among the highlights of the trip.

Highlights in the bird list include Crested Partridge, Malayan Partridge, Crested Fireback, Malayan Peacock Pheasant, Olive-backed Woodpecker, Orange-backed Woodpecker, Red-crowned Barbet (heard only), Great Hornbill, Helmeted Hornbill, Wrinkled Hornbill, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Red-bearded Bee-eater, Blue-banded Kingfisher, Banded Kingfisher, Rufous-collared Kingfisher, Chestnut-bellied Malkoha, Collared Owlet, Brown Wood Owl, Malaysian Eared Nightjar, Rufous-bellied Eagle, Japanese Sparrowhawk, Black-thighed Falconet, Peregrine Falcon, Bat Hawk, Rusty-naped Pitta (heard only), Garnet Pitta, Blue-winged Pitta, Banded Pitta (heard only), Crested Jay, Black Magpie, Slender-billed Crow, Malayan Whistling Thrush, Rufous-chested Flycatcher, Pygmy Blue Flycatcher, Malaysian Blue Flycatcher, Lesser Shortwing, White-tailed Robin, Chestnut-naped Forktail, Blue Nuthatch, Sultan Tit, Black Laughingthrush, White-chested Babbler, Ferruginous Babbler, Sooty-capped Babbler, Large Scimitar Babbler, Chestnut-backed Scimitar Babbler, Striped Wren Babbler, Streaked Wren Babbler, Pygmy Wren Babbler, Golden Babbler, Fluffy-backed Tit Babbler, Pin-tailed Parrotfinch.
