Short Summary and Highlights
It was very dry during our trip with only a few hours rain in Fraser's Hill. We
found very few fruiting trees. This certainly affected the abundance of some groups
of birds, e.g. Doves, Bulbuls and Babblers. The forest floor was dry and we saw
few leeches.
We saw or heard 218 species of birds (10 species were only heard) and 15 species
of mammals. 130 species of birds were seen in Taman Negara including river
Temebeling and 103 species at Fraser's Hill and The Gap.
A Black Cobra at close distance was a thrilling sight, and a Siamang seen well is
surely among the highlights of the trip.
Highlights in the bird list include Crested Partridge, Malayan Partridge, Crested
Fireback, Malayan Peacock Pheasant, Olive-backed Woodpecker, Orange-backed
Woodpecker, Red-crowned Barbet (heard only), Great Hornbill, Helmeted

identified in a flock of 10-15 Hornbills seen in one flock along Kumbang trail, near

flying. It would have been extreme if all birds in the flock were Wrinkled because
this species is the rarest of the Hornbills in TN (Glenda Noramly, pers. com.)
- Wreathed Hornbill (Aceros undulatus). 1 flying at long distance in The Gap and

Both birds also seen at 7.15 next day 14/7. The birds were often confiding and
spent several minutes on or beside the trail. An interesting question is whether this
species breeds in TN because even other birders have seen this species here during
season. Glenda Noramly of the Malaysian Nature Society comments that the Blue-winged
Pitta has only been confirmed as breeding on Langkawi Island. However,
there have been reports of vocalization through the middle months of the year,
which seem to indicate that birds are indeed resident elsewhere on the Peninsula
(e.g. recent reports this year from secondary forest not far from Ipoh in Perak
state).
