"The History of Little Henry: Exemplified in a Series of Figures", 1810. - This item stands in the ambiguous position between book and toy. From this item developed, on the one hand, the paper cut out doll, and on the other, a series of "moveable" books, where various devices were used to transform an existing picture or to "pop-up" another. This kit is an exact replica of the original, in the Victoria and Alberta Museum Library. Unlike modern paper dolls, "Little Henry" is only a head, rather than a full figure. The head is slotted into a small triangle of paper glued to the back of each set of clothing. The small book contains the first verses of a poem outlining what happened to Henry. The complete poem is shipped with the kit, for the interest of the purchaser. |
