....Important Bird Areas in Yemen - IBAs are a conservation priority in
Yemen. BirdLife International through the Yemen office is seeking funding organization to support detail study on IBAs in Yemen. There are 57 sites, 22 exist in Socotra Archipelago.
....Yemen's Wildlife - From the eco-tourism point of view, Yemen's main
attraction is its birdlife, which is particularly abundant during the spring and autumn migrations. At these times thousands of raptors cross the Bab-al-Mandeb straits between Yemen and Africa, but there are also many species that use the junction of land and sea along the Red Sea coast as a flight path between Africa and Europe.
....Et in Arabia Felix (The Fortunate Arabia) - So was Yemen known
in ancient times. In contrast to most of the rest of the Arabian peninsula, with its vast expanses of burning sands and inhospitable gravel plains, here is a land blessed by equinoctial and monsoon rains in its highlands and with wadis where water flows in some cases all year round.  So what does this little-visited country have to offer birdwatchers? Much. It lies on the extreme southern edge of the Palaearctic; is on one of the great migration routes from Eurasia to the Rift Valley of east Africa. It has 11 endemic species; it shares some birds of the Horn of Africa; and it receives vagrants from the Oriental region. What more could you want?
....Yemen, 17 Oct - 7 Nov 1992 - Birding Trip Report by John van der
Woude - From the home of friends in the capital Sana'a, we made several trips in this highly varied country. Birding was the main goal besides the many other interesting things to see (architecture, city and village life, mountains, deserts, etc.). We made daytrips as well as longer trips. Wherever possible, we focused on wadi's (areas around seasonal streams, mostly dry now) because of the more ample tree growth and hence richer bird life.

Endemics and Specialities

in Yemen

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.5, supplemented by material found in Where to watch birds in Asia  - by Nigel Wheatley. African speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Africa. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Yemen.
