The landscape is flat (0-5m above sea level) and is dominated by extensive mud flats and areas of standing water, including a mud flat up to 3km wide that extends along much of the area. A total of 122 species of birds have been recorded in the area. This includes 72 year-round residents and 50 species which occur as migrants from either North America or other parts of South America. Shorebirds and other waterbirds are particularly prominent. Shorebirds are the most common species from approximately mid-August to late April.

**..Suriname Wilderness: Rainforests & Display Grounds of the Guianan
Cock-of-the-rock with Victor Emanuel Nature Tours (VENT) - Located on the northern coast of South America, Suriname has a fine nature reserve system operated by their forestry service (STINASU). Several areas have simple facilities that can accommodate groups. For those willing to accept rustic accommodations and a little adventure along the way, there are sure to be many rewards. A hallmark feature of the Suriname trip has always been the opportunity to visit a display ground of the fabled Guianan Cock-of-the-rock. During peak periods, more than 50 males have been reported at this display in what is, unquestionably, one of the great spectacles of the continent.
      • Suriname Wilderness - January 7 - 18, 2002 (13.0 days - Limit 14) with leaders Steve Hilty & Daniel Ascanio
      • Suriname Wilderness - January 6 - 17, 2003 (13.0 days - Limit 14) with leaders Steve Hilty & Daniel Ascanio

Endemics and Specialities

in Suriname

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.5, supplemented by material found in Where to Watch Birds in South America - by Nigel Wheatley. South American speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of South America. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Suriname.
