....Srebarna Nature Reserve - a fresh-water lake supplied from the
Danube, extending over 600 hectares. It is the breeding home of close to 100 species of birds, many of which are rare or endangered. Some 80 other bird species migrate and seek refuge there every winter.
....Birding beyond Hertfordshire: Bulgaria in autumn - 21 species of raptor
in six days. Joan Thompson has recently returned from Bulgaria where she spent time this autumn watching raptors and other species on their southwards migration. Once renown as the easiest place in Europe for birdwatchers to get arrested (the politically sensitive pickle factory at Burgas now seems to be just a fading folk-myth), the country is now an excellent destination for those wishing to experience eastern European birdwatching. Joan tells of some of her birding experiences there.
....Birding in Bulgaria - by Gerard Gorman of Pro-Birder. Mention Bulgaria
and most birders think of the wetlands of the Black Sea coast. This is because there are some species here, like Paddyfield Warbler, Pied Wheatear and winter flocks of Red-breasted Geese, which are very difficult elsewhere in Europe (neighbouring Romania excepted).
....Bulgaria Filming Trip Highlights - by David Gosney. An illustrated
report from a filming trip to Bulgaria.
....Bulgaria - Directory of Wetlands of International Importance - includes
information on all Bulgarian Ramsar designated sites, including:
      • Srébarna
      • Arkoutino
      • Atanassovo Lake
      • Durankulak Lake

European Endemics and Specialities

in Bulgaria

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.05. Speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Europe. Species printed in bold italic can only be found in Bulgaria. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Bulgaria.
