Slovakia Specialities

....Birding in Slovakia - by Gerard Gorman of PROBIRDER. Slovakia is
essentially a mountainous country with the impressive High and Low (don't be misled by the term "low") Tatras arguably the most well known outside the country. Each range has it's own character but overall they are typically rugged, forested and some often snow capped. But they are not totally inaccesible to birders as a good tourist, particularly winter sport, infrastructure means there are well-marked trails, chair-lifts, sometimes cable cars and chalets in most regions.
....Trip Report: Eastern Europe. June 9-27, 1996 by Anssi K. Kullberg.
We just returned from an unforgettable 3-week journey through the former East Europe. The ornithological highlights of the trip were the Hungarian Puszta, Transsylvania and the Southern Carpates in Romania and the Higher Tatra in Slovakia.

Emanuel Nature Tours (VENT) - This is another new development in VENT's popular series of European tours, which offer a 50-50 mix of first-rate birding with exciting explorations of local culture and history. Slovakia and the Czech Republic are small, stable. and highly attractive independent eastern European states which, until recently, formed the one country of Czechoslovakia. The varied scenery and habitats are truly delightful, and there is a long and equally varied history & parts of the area were the former states of Moravia and Bohemia. The tour is scheduled at a prime time to see the excellent array of breeding birds at their very best, but we also allow plenty of time for enjoying the historical and cultural delights of this fascinating region.  VENT offers nearly 140 tours to over 100 land-based destinations each year and is the largest tour company in the world specializing in birding and natural history.

European Endemics and Specialities

in Slovakia

Information on endemics and specialities is derived from Sibley & Monroe checklists and bird distribution lists in Thayer's Birder's Diary - Version 2.05. Speciality birds, while not endemic, are those that can only be found in three or less countries of Europe. Species printed in bold italic have only been sighted in Slovakia. Information on endangered birds is derived from the IUCN Red List, Birdlife International, and supporting data bases developed by Ian Patton, of Merlin Species Watcher.  The endemic, endangered and speciality birds may be uncommon, extremely rare vagrants, may be extirpated in the country now or may only be present in migration. However, documented sightings of each species noted below have been made in Slovakia.
